greywater reuse including - size, design, practical techniques and
proven applications. Includes discussion of regulations,
safety issues.
2. Solar for Small Homes •

pervious concrete has given Michael Hein a thorough understanding of
good practices and bad. Find out the basics of pervious concrete,
how to successfully add this emerging technology to your next project
and pitfalls to avoid.
5. Residential Rating Systems Compared •
Alexander Bell
Overview of the several prominent green building systems and comparison of the goals, costs and certification processes.
Focus on LEED for Homes, NAHB Green, EarthCraft House, and HBAA EnergyKey. Includes programs relation to ENERGY STAR,
DOE Builder's Challenge and EPA Indoor Air Plus.
6. Landscape and Stream Water Quality Connections in a Watershed • Eric Reutebuch
7. DESIGN Habitat
(CS) • Justin Miller
How the partnership between AU
Architecture, DESIGN Alabama and Alabama Association of Habitat
Affiliates has changed Habitat for Humanity homes.
8. Green Building and
Development Regulation • Becki Retzlaff
Discover how
green buildings are addressed in urban planning and development
regulations.
9. Energy Star 2011 • Janet McIlvane
Overview of ENERGY
STAR 2011 proposed changes.
: : To earn the ENERGY STAR, a home must
meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency. These homes are at least 15% more
energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential
Code (IRC), and include additional energy-saving features that typically
make them 20–30% more efficient than standard homes. As
codes have changed/improved, the Energy Star program must continue to
improve to keep the 15% improvement when compared to newer codes like
the ICC 2009 series.
10. Fortified…for
Safer Living • Carl Schneider &
Fred Malik
Fortified…for Safer Living is
a program of the Institute for Business and Home Safety which matches
the risks in your geographic region with specific proven strategies to
reduce storm damage and property loss.
11. Water: Big Picture Perspectives and Applications for Alabama - • Bill Deutsch
12. OVE: Advanced Framing •
Tony Mainsbridge
Use lumber smarter to reduce waste and thermal bridging; save materials and money on any residential project.
13. The Waters (CS) • Nathan
R. Norris
Folks started talking about the loss of
community somewhere around the time developers started building
neighborhoods around the needs of cars. The Waters' planners and
developers employed timeless principles to deliver things beyond just
convenient access . Think of it as quality of life, by design.
Walkable streets and meaningful destinations that bring people together.
The Waters is destined to become something special, even historic.
Poised to become a national model of how to do things right, a
newly built Traditional Southern Neighborhood.
14. Universal Design
- "Aging in Place" • Tiffani Irwin
Define key concepts
for "Aging in Place" (Universal Design) and how it relates to
sustainability and High Performance homes. Evaluate a house plan
for Aging in Place features/practicality, including strategies.
Modify/Develop house plans for immediate and future Aging in Place
features. Discuss how incorporating Aging in Place can help
achieve certification in "green" programs.
15. EarthCraft Family of Programs •
Stephen Christensen
A collaborative program created by the Atlanta Homebuilders Association and Southface Energy Institute, the
EarthCraft Program includes New Homes, Renovation, Communities, Multi-Family and Regional components
Developed in the Southeast, by builders for builders, the EarthCraft Program takes advantage of the local climate
to optimize the program focus and goals creating synergies unique to this program.
16. Retaining and Reusing Water On-site •
Tia Gonzales
Rain-barrels, water gardens, etc., keeping water on site within a building project. This is the classroom portion
of the hands-on rain-barrel class taught locally for the last year.
18. Toward Net Zero Prototypes (CS) •
Janet McIlvane
The
Department of Energy's Building America Industrialized Housing
Partnership with Habitat for Humanity affiliates on the Gulf Coast have
built dozens of prototype houses meeting 25-30% energy savings goals,
using proven-off the shelf technology and strategies. Lear about
the specifications and processes for the 40-50% energy savings projects
underway. What other strategies are under consideration for
meeting the 2030 Challenge of Net Zero Homes as a standard product by
2030. Consider how to integrate cost effective, readily available
in current market and easily maintained strategies into new and existing
designs.
19. 2006/2009 IECC Overview • Kevin Gobble
Key points of the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and changes from the 2006 code.
20. EPA WaterSense • Arthur O. Buff, P.E.
Overiew of the EPA WaterSense
program with an introduction to the new certification for residential
projects, including practical strategies, water efficient products and
services for homes.
21. HVAC for High Performance Residential •
Kevin Gobble
What are the ENERGY STAR program requirements for HVAC. How will this
change for 2011? What are best practices for sizing and installation in
energy efficient residential projects.
22. Home Energy Audits & HERS Rating System •
Tabetha Reyes
Covering
four key areas: Airsealing: How air changes per hour effect comfort,
efficiency, indoor air quality, and durability in residential type
structures. Determine minimum ventilation needs and methods to provide
mechanical fresh air. Common issues with heating cooling and
distribution systems in existing homes. including cover right-sizing,
duct sealing, and combustion issues. Includes discussion of the
value of infrared cameras, HERS ratings for existing homes and Asset
Ratings vs. Occupant Ratings

EnergyKey program of the Homebuilders Association
of Alabama.
25. EPA Indoor Air Plus •Eric Werling
&
Casey Murphy
Americans spend millions of dollars every year on accessory air filters,
air purifiers, and other products to improve the air inside their homes.
The EPA Indoor Air Plus
program assists builders in making sound decisions with surprising
construction details and processes which can help or hinder (if ignored)
the goal of a safe and healthy living environment.
26. Zero Energy Today •
Norbert Lechner
Key
materials include: Solar responsive design strategies include many no
cost/low cost strategies that should be used whenever possible.
How to include passive solar space heating in almost every design at low
